“Perio” = around,  ”Odonto” = tooth     Literal translation = “around the tooth”

A Periodontist is a dental specialist who has spent an additional 3 years of advanced residency training after the completion of dental school.  They are extensively trained in the supporting structures of the teeth (bone, gum tissue, connective tissue, etc) and in the diagnosis, prevention, cause and treatment of periodontal disease (gum disease).

Periodontists are experts in both the Non-surgical and Surgical treatment of periodontal disease as well as the placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth.
